Sradagan are Gaelic medium community groups for children aged 5-12 years. Sradagan provides an opportunity for children to develop their Gaelic language skills in a social setting. This is particularly important for children whose only other exposure to Gaelic is in School. If Gaelic is to continue as a ‘living’ language it has to be used outwith our schools and in our communities. Gaelic-medium education is of immense importance to the future of Gaelic and Sradagan groups are an essential support mechanism for education.
Sradagan acts as a bridge between schools and the community. Children are encouraged to use their Gaelic with a variety of people in a variety of settings and gain the confidence in their ability to use Gaelic. The habit of using Gaelic outwith the classroom must be established before children leave school. If parents and children in your community are interested in forming such a club, let us know at Comunn na Gàidhlig. A meeting will then be held with you, to give you the relevant information and guidance necessary for the establishment of the club. The club must meet in premises which are suitable for the use of the community. The club will meet at least weekly for a minimum one hour session.
